Great list. I learned pretty much all of those the hard way in my first startup, so they all hit pretty close to home. I wish you would have written this in 2003!

This 'viral' crap only seems to work for videos. Selling real products online and managing inventory and catering to customers is very difficult. You need serious commitments from people and enough money to keep them eating.

Your best advice is lowering the bar to get customers engaged.

Should interfaces conform to standards and visually obvious things or should you steer them to something specifically?

Fantastic List. Although I fully buy into what you are saying, I hadn't seen some of these fantastic resources you linked to to help combat said delusions. Like you said, it's not the idea, it's the execution.

Hey Alistair,

Great post and way more entertaining than mine... :) I love/hate the "my product is viral" argument. I always ask people if they automatically accept every Facebook app request just because they're viral. Entrepreneurs are still underestimating the *sales* effort it takes to capture just one user. It ain't easy. But it's easier to extrapolate users in Excel then get into the trenches and pitch customers.
