I was kidding! My joke was why does he need money for his invention when the invention itself prints money. Oh well, they say if that if you have to explain a joke, it isn't funny....

The VC needs money to ramp up production, I guess. Maybe it'd take too long to build the next 499 machines? Or perhaps accepting $1 bills requires some form of innovation?

Great allegory. One question though: since the entrepreneur has invented a machine that basically prints money, why does he need the VCs? ;-)

This is the kind of stuff we hear over and over and never apply... until we experienced it.
It is good to hear it for an nth time to refresh our memory!

The other piece I like to this story...The guy who can create and build that first penny machine is likely NOT the guy who will manage and run the shop that goes from 1 to 500 of those penny machines. Everyone is likely better off to let him loose to go dream up, and create, the next penny machine because that's what he does best and those are completely distinct skillsets that rarely coexist in one person.

You're one great story-teller. Don't be offended, but I'll repeat the same story to entrepreneurs I'll meet -- as one says, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery

Great metaphor and great post. We often get so wrapped in the wonders of our technology that we forget to first satisfy the investor's need for greed. They're not in this (just) to build better mouse traps, but to turn $1 into $5 or $10.
